Back to the Roots

The new single by Morgaine and Pata59 is a musical statement against the madness of war and for a more peaceful world. Backstage

„Even if the times have turned dark once more, I stay connected and don’t forget who I am.“

The new song WURZELN by the profound musician Morgaine and the socially critical rapper Pata59 captures the current spirit of the age and is a call to everyone to stand up resolutely and actively for humanity, disarmament and peace, in a world that grows ever colder.

My new anti-war song WURZELN, which I made together with Pata59, is a statement on the current and ever-swelling madness of war waged by those in power – and our sign for peace. We want to use the power of music and our voices as critical artists for more connectedness in times of war.

The roots of the trees stand for us symbolically as a very beautiful example of how things could also be – especially for people like us, who wish for a positive change in the world.

A network that grows and acts underground, working in symbiosis with all kinds of other microorganisms. They communicate with one another and support each other. No matter how stony or arduous the ground, no matter how trodden the earth, how dry the land or how dead the asphalt may be – roots can never be stopped, they always find their way and never give up. And so it is with us as peace activists and free spirits. And we are more than we think.

When Pata59 and I hear sentences like „Germany must become fit for war again“, we have to contradict the politicians in the clearest terms: NO! Germany must finally become fit for peace! Enough has been murdered and destroyed – it is enough. The people want peace!

Like these roots, we too can hold the earth together as a whole and work together – for peace. Humanity must recognise itself as one family and truly feel this, must understand itself as a single tribe and learn to act as one. This trunk is one, and from it many boughs and branches grow out into the world – with different blossoms and fruits, yet all equally beautiful and important for the greater whole.

We are like a tree, a single trunk – the inhabitants of planet Earth. If our roots are strong and live in synergy, then life here can flourish in all its splendour too. Trees in the forest do not wage war on each other, they would never come up with such an absurd idea. And yet an ancient forest is full of different species, and every species is important for the balance. On this point the forest is one step ahead of us – and we could take it as an example. The underground network of the trees, the roots, is connected and strong. That is how we too should be: untamed, wild and in our full strength – and at least as resolute as those who want war!

With our song we want to sharpen people’s awareness of a life lived as a community and to remind them of their roots. Not of national or ethnic roots, but of their roots as a soul in a human body – and to remind them why we are here.

We are not here to wage wars, but to learn connection anew.

There is enough space, enough raw materials, enough of everything for everyone. In truth we could all live in infinite abundance – the scarcity is only artificially manufactured. When we recognise and perceive ourselves and our innermost essence again, then we come back into feeling – and then no fear-propaganda or war-mongering works any more.

We are always led to believe that wars lie in human nature and have always been waged. We do not believe this. And with our song we show people that it can actually be so simple.

With WURZELN and its accompanying music video we have created a kind of art project that conveys, on the one hand, the gloomy mood and drama of war, but at the same time also the powerful energy of hope and positive determination. It was important to me to integrate our bodies and strong movements as well, because for me that carries an even greater expressive power than the spoken or sung word alone. In combination with the music, this work holds within it the great potential to unite very different people with one another around a common denominator: peace.

Roots grow underground. And so a real and lasting change must also come from below. Together we are strong – and „you will never get our hope, our hearts stay open“.
